CONCRETEClass 2.2 – Opportunities & Challenges with Self Compacting Concrete

Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) has transformed the way concrete can be placed, offering improved flowability, reduced labour requirements, and enhanced surface finishes without the need for vibration. However, achieving these benefits requires a sound understanding of the material’s behaviour, mix design principles, and practical application on site.
This presentation will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of SCC, exploring how it works, where it is commonly used, and the advantages it offers over conventional concrete.
The session will also discuss some of the challenges associated with SCC, including mix stability, quality control, placement considerations, and cost implications. Through practical examples, attendees will gain a better understanding of both the opportunities and challenges associated with the successful use of Self-Compacting Concrete in modern construction.

Presenter: Prof. Manu Santhanam, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras

Prof. Manu Santhanam is the Surendra and Dorothie Shah Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, India. A Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and RILEM, he is internationally recognised for his research on cementitious materials, concrete durability, supplementary cementitious materials, and emerging technologies such as 3D-printed concrete. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of the performance and durability of concrete, particularly in aggressive environments, with a focus on extending service life and improving sustainability.
Prof. Santhanam has supervised numerous postgraduate researchers, published more than 180 technical papers in leading journals and conferences, and led major research projects in collaboration with government agencies and industry partners. He is an active contributor to international organisations such as fib, RILEM, and the Indian Concrete Institute, and serves on the editorial boards of several leading concrete and construction materials journals.
