CONCRETEFiX 6.6 – Green Buildings and Thermal Performance: Lessons from South Africa and the Gulf Region

By Prof. Amjad Khabaz, WITS University
As the demand for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings continues to grow, understanding the role of concrete in improving thermal performance has become increasingly important.
This presentation explores the design and construction requirements of green buildings in South Africa and compares them with practices adopted in the hot climates of the Gulf region.
The session will focus on how conventional reinforced concrete roofs and external walls can be utilised to improve thermal insulation, reduce energy consumption, and create more comfortable indoor environments. Particular attention will be given to heat transfer through building envelopes,
the principles of thermal performance, and the requirements of SANS 10400-XA in relation to international best practice.
Attendees will gain practical insight into how concrete design can contribute to more sustainable buildings while meeting modern energy-efficiency requirements.
