CONCRETEClass 1.4 – Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) in Concrete

This class will explore Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR)—a chemical process that can lead to the deterioration of concrete. ASR occurs when “reactive” silica in certain aggregates reacts with alkali hydroxides present in the concrete’s pore solution. In the presence of moisture, this reaction forms an expansive gel that exerts internal pressure, leading to cracking and deformation. Over time, ASR can significantly compromise the durability and structural integrity of concrete structures.

Requirements for attending this class:
– Basic knowledge of the constituents of concrete
– Basic mathematics, no more than Matric Level

The class will build on prior knowledge of concrete deterioration mechanisms and emphasise the role of “reactive” aggregates in concrete performance.

Presenter: Ms. Janina P. Kanjee, University of the Witwatersrand
Ms. Janina P. Kanjee is a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she has been teaching since 2018. Her doctoral research focused on Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) deterioration in a reinforced concrete railway bridge, located in Southern Johannesburg which was constructed in 1946.
In 2023, she was honoured with the Young Concrete Researcher Award by Cement & Concrete SA, recognizing her impactful contributions to the field. Her ongoing research centres on concrete durability, ASR deterioration, sustainable construction materials and practices.
