Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) in Concrete

Thursday, 08 May 2025

Presenter: Ms. Janina P. Kanjee, University of the Witwatersrand

This class explores Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR)—a chemical process that can lead to the deterioration of concrete. ASR occurs when “reactive” silica in certain aggregates reacts with alkali hydroxides present in the concrete’s pore solution. In the presence of moisture, this reaction forms an expansive gel that exerts internal pressure, leading to cracking and deformation. Over time, ASR can significantly compromise the durability and structural integrity of concrete structures.
