CONCRETEClass 1.1 – Back to Basics: Concrete Mix Design according to Fulton’s Concrete Technology, 10th Edition

This class will cover basic mix design principles for concrete according to the newest Fulton’s Concrete Technology textbook. With this information you will be able to do basic concrete mix designs incorporating strength and workability requirements. This lecture does not include durability specifications, self-compacting concrete or other special concrete types, but does include the basic principles of the use of plasticisers.

Requirements for benefitting from this class:
– Basic knowledge of the constituents of concrete
– Basic mathematics, no more than Matric Level

Presenter: Prof Billy Boshoff from the University of Pretoria
Billy Boshoff, PrEng, graduated with a PhD at Stellenbosch University and started working at the same institution in 2008. He has since (2019) taken a position as Full Professor at the University of Pretoria. He has taught Structural Mechanics, Structural Analyses, Finite Element Method and of course, Construction and Building Materials during his career. His research includes, amongst others, fibre reinforced concrete, early age properties of concrete which includes curing and plastic shrinkage cracking. He is currently looking at the Active Control of Concrete in the early stages of the concrete’s life.
