CONRETEClass 1.5 – Cracking the Code: Reliability in Structural Concrete Design

This presentation gives an overview of how reliability shapes structural concrete design in a South African context. It introduces reliability as a framework for achieving structural safety, functionality and economy, and considers key elements such as target reliability, partial safety factors, and characteristic values in load and resistance (including materials). Beyond the numbers, it also examines the qualitative side of reliability – design checks, construction supervision, and robustness. With practical examples and references to familiar codes, the presentation connects theory to everyday design decisions.
Requirements for attending this class:
– A basic knowledge of structural design would be helpful

Attendees will gain:
– An understanding of how reliability forms the basis for structural design
– A broad understanding of how elements (e.g. partial factors, characteristic values) in load and resistance collectively contribute towards the reliability of a structure
– An appreciation for the need for commensurate qualitative reliability measures (e.g. design checking, site supervision)

Presenter: Dr Andrew Way, Stellenbosch University
Dr Andrew Way has been a research fellow and lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University since 2021. Between his MEng and PhD, he spent 3 years in industry where he enjoyed the design of general structures and bridges. His interests lie in ensuring that structures stay upright through research into risk and reliability in structural engineering, the use of informatics in civil engineering, and the development of professional skills through engineering education.
