SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 6.4 - Using Colloidal Silica to Protect Concrete from Biogenic Sulfuric Acid Attack in Wastewater and Organic Waste Environments
DESCRIPTION:By Brent Rollins\, Vice President of Business Development Spray-Lock Concrete Protection\, LLC \nConcrete structures in sanitary sewage\, agricultural\, and food processing environments face severe degradation from biogenic sulfuric acid (BSA) corrosion\, where bacterial metabolism of waste produces hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) that oxidizes to sulfuric acid (H2SO4). This acid reacts with cement hydration products\, forming expansive gypsum and leading to spalling\, cracking\, and reduced service life. Colloidal silica\, consisting of nano-sized amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) in a water-based carrier formula\, has been shown to reduce concrete permeability significantly. Reducing permeability is the primary durability strategy for many concrete exposure conditions including in environments where BSA is present.\nThis presentation reviews the published data regarding colloidal silica’s ability to help protect against BSA\, then moves to the field to examine several real-world projects where colloidal silica has been used as part of a protection strategy. While results vary by dosage\, application method\, and exposure severity\, overall evidence supports extended service life and reduced maintenance. \nDATE: Thursday\, 25 June 2026\nvia Microsoft Teams @ 15:00\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points. SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 6.6 - Green Buildings and Thermal Performance: Lessons from South Africa and the Gulf Region
DESCRIPTION:By Prof. Amjad Khabaz\, WITS University \nAs the demand for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings continues to grow\, understanding the role of concrete in improving thermal performance has become increasingly important.\nThis presentation explores the design and construction requirements of green buildings in South Africa and compares them with practices adopted in the hot climates of the Gulf region.\nThe session will focus on how conventional reinforced concrete roofs and external walls can be utilised to improve thermal insulation\, reduce energy consumption\, and create more comfortable indoor environments. Particular attention will be given to heat transfer through building envelopes\,\nthe principles of thermal performance\, and the requirements of SANS 10400-XA in relation to international best practice.\nAttendees will gain practical insight into how concrete design can contribute to more sustainable buildings while meeting modern energy-efficiency requirements. \nDATE: Thursday\, 20 August 2026\nvia Microsoft Teams @ 15:00\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points.
