SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 6.4 - Using Colloidal Silica to Protect Concrete from Biogenic Sulfuric Acid Attack in Wastewater and Organic Waste Environments
DESCRIPTION:By Brent Rollins\, Vice President of Business Development Spray-Lock Concrete Protection\, LLC \nConcrete structures in sanitary sewage\, agricultural\, and food processing environments face severe degradation from biogenic sulfuric acid (BSA) corrosion\, where bacterial metabolism of waste produces hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) that oxidizes to sulfuric acid (H2SO4). This acid reacts with cement hydration products\, forming expansive gypsum and leading to spalling\, cracking\, and reduced service life. Colloidal silica\, consisting of nano-sized amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) in a water-based carrier formula\, has been shown to reduce concrete permeability significantly. Reducing permeability is the primary durability strategy for many concrete exposure conditions including in environments where BSA is present.\nThis presentation reviews the published data regarding colloidal silica’s ability to help protect against BSA\, then moves to the field to examine several real-world projects where colloidal silica has been used as part of a protection strategy. While results vary by dosage\, application method\, and exposure severity\, overall evidence supports extended service life and reduced maintenance. \nDATE: Thursday\, 25 June 2026\nvia Microsoft Teams @ 15:00\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points. SUMMARY:CONCRETEClass 2.2 - Opportunities & Challenges with Self Compacting Concrete
DESCRIPTION:Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) has transformed the way concrete can be placed\, offering improved flowability\, reduced labour requirements\, and enhanced surface finishes without the need for vibration. However\, achieving these benefits requires a sound understanding of the material’s behaviour\, mix design principles\, and practical application on site.\nThis presentation will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of SCC\, exploring how it works\, where it is commonly used\, and the advantages it offers over conventional concrete.\nThe session will also discuss some of the challenges associated with SCC\, including mix stability\, quality control\, placement considerations\, and cost implications. Through practical examples\, attendees will gain a better understanding of both the opportunities and challenges associated with the successful use of Self-Compacting Concrete in modern construction. \nPresenter: Prof. Manu Santhanam\, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras \nProf. Manu Santhanam is the Surendra and Dorothie Shah Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras\, India. A Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and RILEM\, he is internationally recognised for his research on cementitious materials\, concrete durability\, supplementary cementitious materials\, and emerging technologies such as 3D-printed concrete. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of the performance and durability of concrete\, particularly in aggressive environments\, with a focus on extending service life and improving sustainability.\nProf. Santhanam has supervised numerous postgraduate researchers\, published more than 180 technical papers in leading journals and conferences\, and led major research projects in collaboration with government agencies and industry partners. He is an active contributor to international organisations such as fib\, RILEM\, and the Indian Concrete Institute\, and serves on the editorial boards of several leading concrete and construction materials journals. \nDate: Thursday\, 09 July 2026\nTime: 15:00 – 16:00 \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points. SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 6.6 - A Century of Performance: Design\, Assessment\, & Maintenance of Concrete Structures
DESCRIPTION:By Prof Sylvia Keßler\, Helmut-Schmidt-University /  University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg\, Germany \nAs sustainability\, resilience\, and whole-life performance become increasingly important\, concrete structures are expected to provide reliable service for 100 years or more. Achieving this requires a shift from traditional prescriptive design towards a performance-based\, life-cycle approach.\nThis presentation explores reinforcement corrosion as the primary deterioration mechanism affecting reinforced concrete structures in aggressive  environments. It highlights advances in probabilistic service-life design\, condition assessment\, and maintenance planning\, demonstrating how these approaches improve the prediction of structural performance and support informed decision-making throughout a structure’s life.\nThe presentation will also examine how visual inspections\, electrochemical measurements\, and non-destructive testing can be integrated with service-life models to optimise maintenance strategies and prioritise repair interventions.\nUsing practical examples\, the webinar will demonstrate how performance-based durability design and evidence-based asset management can help engineers deliver concrete structures that remain durable\, resilient\, and fit for purpose for a century or more. \nDATE: Thursday\, 17 September 2026\nvia Microsoft Teams @ 15:00\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points.
