DESCRIPTION:Efficient structures emerge when conceptual form and force are considered together. This webinar introduces graphic statics as a practical tool for visualising and designing with forces. Through historical and modern examples\, the webinar will show how structural form can be shaped for minimised material use as well as architectural expression. SUMMARY:CONCRETEClass 1.6 - Supplementary cementitious materials – From origin to interpreting the notation on a cement bag
DESCRIPTION:Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are typically used to replace between 6% and 65% of Portland cement (PC) to produce blended or composite cements. SCMs are often by-products of other industries or have a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to Portland cement (PC). In addition to their environmental benefits\, the use of SCMs also helps extend the life of limestone reserves\, which are critical for PC manufacturing. Portland and composite cements fall under the category of common cements used in concrete\, and must comply with the SANS 50197 standard. This\npresentation explores the main SCMs used in concrete—from their origin to their impact on concrete properties. It also considers the SANS 50197 requirements for common cements and discusses typical SCM replacement levels. SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 5.8 - Low-Carbon Binders and Concretes\, with a view to their durability and adoption in construction practice
DESCRIPTION:By Prof. Mark Alexander\, University of Cape Town \nThe presentation covers the background to low-carbon cements (binders) and concretes\, and places them in a continuum of binder developments in recent decades. It is stressed that low-carbon binders have been used successfully in the form of highly extended cements for a considerable time\, provided the properties were understood\, and have in many instances produced concrete with admirable durability\, especially with regard to chloride ingress and ASR. Low-carbon binders tend to reduce the carbonation resistance of concrete\, which has limited their application for certain exposure\ncategories. However\, further research is required to assess if lower carbonation resistance of low carbon-concrete really relates to lower durability\, considering that these binders may significantly reduce the risk of reinforcement corrosion propagation. Newer low-carbon binders need careful and comprehensive characterisation of their properties and performance in order to be used confidently and successfully. The challenge of long-term performance is recognised. The demands for low-carbon binders generated by climate change must be speedily satisfied. DESCRIPTION:By Sarah Skorpen & Megan Brink\, from the University of Pretoria \nThis presentation will cover some of the material testing done by the SANRAL 7a2 Integral Bridge Research Group. Results show that the aggregate type used to make concrete has a significant effect on the stiffness (E-value)\, thermal expansion\, drying shrinkage and creep of the concrete despite the concrete having the same characteristic strength. SUMMARY:CONCRETEClass 1.2 – Concrete Durability – Deterioration Mechanisms and Basic Design Rules
DESCRIPTION:This class will cover relevant deterioration mechanisms for concrete structures\, such as ingress of deleterious substances\, reinforcement corrosion\, chemical attack\, ASR and shrinkage cracking. Guidelines for concrete mix design and construction procedures aiming at minimizing the risk of concrete deterioration and maximizing service life will be discussed. \nRequirements for benefitting from this class:\n– Basic knowledge of the constituents of concrete\n– Basic mathematics\, no more than Matric Level \nPresenter: Prof. Hans Beushausen\, University of Cape Town \nHans Beushausen studied civil engineering in Germany and South Africa and completed his PhD at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2005\, working in the fields of repair and rehabilitation of concrete structures. In subsequent years\, he broadened his scope of research and teaching from general\nfields related to structural engineering into service life prediction and performance-based design of structures\, steel reinforcement corrosion and sustainable concrete technology with a focus on low carbon cementitious binders and recycled aggregate concrete. He is a Director of the Concrete Materials and Structural Integrity Research Unit and Convenor of the postgraduate programme on Civil Infrastructure Management and Maintenance at the University of Cape Town and a member of several scientific and professional associations. He chaired the RILEM Development Activities Committee from 2020 to 2024 and was Head of the South African National Delegation of fib from 2014 to 2024.
