SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 6.2: SANS 51992-1-1 in Practice: Key Changes from SANS 10100
DESCRIPTION:By Dr Kim Timm\, Stellenbosch University \nSouth Africa’s transition from SANS 10100 to SANS 51992-1-1 marks a move toward alignment with international best practice in reinforced concrete design. This presentation briefly covers the rationale for the change and the implementation timeline\, before focusing on what it means in practice for designers. The emphasis is on the key differences between SANS 10100 and SANS 51992-1-1.\nThe session highlights revisions to familiar design procedures and detailing requirements that will affect everyday design work. It also points to new or significantly expanded provisions in SANS 51992-1-1\, including those related to materials\, serviceability\, and the more explicit treatment of durability and exposure classes.\nThe aim is to give practicing engineers a clear view of what has changed\, where to find it in the code\, and how it will affect the design of concrete structures in South Africa going forward. \n  \nDATE: Thursday\, 23 April 2026\nvia Microsoft Teams @ 15:00\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points. SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 5.12 - Pricing vs. Performance: Rethinking Concrete Choices on Tight Timelines
DESCRIPTION:By Martinus Stroebel\, Technical Manager\, Métier Mixed Concrete \nWhen quantity surveyors price a job\, nine times out of ten they go with the cheapest concrete quote they can get. Then\, once the project kicks off and the project manager realises the formwork turnaround isn’t meeting expectations\, the ready-mix supplier often gets blamed for “poor-quality” concrete.\nBut is it really a concrete problem? Or should contractors and engineers be a bit more mindful when pricing a job that has tight timelines? \nDATE: Thursday\, 20 November 2025\nvia Teams @ 15:00 SAST (UTC+2 hours)\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points.\nTo become a Member visit our website: www.concretesocietysa.org.za \nRSVP\nNatasja Pols on or before Wednesday\, 19 November 2025 to natasja.pols@concretesocietysa.org.za \n  \nRSVP HERE\n\n

SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 5.11 - Pre-cast Post-tensioned Reservoirs — Smarter\, Faster\, Stronger
DESCRIPTION:By Willie Steenkamp & Kobus Kotze – Directors\, Infinite Consulting Engineers \nModern water infrastructure demands speed\, precision\, and durability — qualities achieved through pre-cast post-tensioned reservoir systems.\nUnlike traditional in-situ builds\, pre-cast elements are manufactured under strict factory quality control\, ensuring consistent strength and watertightness. The modular assembly process shortens construction time\, reduces on-site labour\, and limits weather delays — translating\ndirectly into earlier commissioning and lower project risk. \nFor contractors\, the system minimizes formwork and shuttering on site\, improving safety and programme reliability.\nFor engineers\, it offers predictable performance\, cleaner detailing\, and long-term serviceability.\nTogether\, these benefits make pre-cast post-tensioned reservoirs a next-generation solution for efficient and durable water storage. \nDATE: Thursday\, 23 October 2025\nvia Teams @ 15:00 SAST (UTC+2 hours)\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points. SUMMARY:CONCRETEClass 1.6 - Supplementary cementitious materials – From origin to interpreting the notation on a cement bag
DESCRIPTION:Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are typically used to replace between 6% and 65% of Portland cement (PC) to produce blended or composite cements. SCMs are often by-products of other industries or have a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to Portland cement (PC). In addition to their environmental benefits\, the use of SCMs also helps extend the life of limestone reserves\, which are critical for PC manufacturing. Portland and composite cements fall under the category of common cements used in concrete\, and must comply with the SANS 50197 standard. This\npresentation explores the main SCMs used in concrete—from their origin to their impact on concrete properties. It also considers the SANS 50197 requirements for common cements and discusses typical SCM replacement levels. Finally\, the presentation explains how to interpret the notation found on a bag of cement. \nRequirements for attending this class:\n– Basic knowledge of the constituents of concrete\n– Basic mathematics\, no more than Matric Level \nLearning outcomes of presentation:\nThe aim of this presentation is to provide a basic understanding of SCMs\, from origin to their influence on concrete\, and how to identify which and how much SCMs are present in a given bag of cement. \nPresenter: Prof. Riaan Combrinck \, Stellenbosch University\nRiaan Combrinck is a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University. SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 5.8 - Low-Carbon Binders and Concretes\, with a view to their durability and adoption in construction practice
DESCRIPTION:By Prof. Mark Alexander\, University of Cape Town \nThe presentation covers the background to low-carbon cements (binders) and concretes\, and places them in a continuum of binder developments in recent decades. It is stressed that low-carbon binders have been used successfully in the form of highly extended cements for a considerable time\, provided the properties were understood\, and have in many instances produced concrete with admirable durability\, especially with regard to chloride ingress and ASR. Low-carbon binders tend to reduce the carbonation resistance of concrete\, which has limited their application for certain exposure\ncategories. However\, further research is required to assess if lower carbonation resistance of low carbon-concrete really relates to lower durability\, considering that these binders may significantly reduce the risk of reinforcement corrosion propagation. Newer low-carbon binders need careful and comprehensive characterisation of their properties and performance in order to be used confidently and successfully. The challenge of long-term performance is recognised. The demands for low-carbon binders generated by climate change must be speedily satisfied. The presentation concludes with an overview of standards and policies that might facilitate speedy adoption of these materials. \nDATE: Thursday\, 24 July 2025\nvia Teams @ 15:00 SAST (UTC+2 hours)\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points. SUMMARY:CONCRETEFiX 5.6 - Extrinsic Factors That Alter True Measured Concrete Strength
DESCRIPTION:By Dr Roderick Rankine\, Rod Rankine Engineering Solutions cc \nThe measured strength of concrete has life changing implications for safety\, profitability and survival of construction companies. Not only does this strength depend upon the composition and intrinsic properties of the concrete tested\, but also on the way the concrete is tested. Testing standards\nattempt to standardise testing methodologies to ensure that measured strength is true\, reliable and accurate. Departures from these standards (whether intentional or unintentional) can have profound effects on measured strength (usually to the downside) often leading to needless disputes and even bankruptcy. This presentation will demonstrate the most common mistakes by means of reference to case studies and laboratory demonstrations and it will endeavour to offer guidelines to avoid pitfalls. \nDATE: Thursday\, 22 May 2025\nvia Teams @ 15:00 SAST (UTC+2 hours)\nAttendance Free \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points.\nTo become a Member visit our website: www.concretesocietysa.org.za or contact Natasja. \nRSVP\nNatasja Pols on or before Wednesday\, 21 May 2025 to natasja.pols@concretesocietysa.org.za \nRSVP HERE\n\n

SUMMARY:CONCRETEClass 1.4 - Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) in Concrete
DESCRIPTION:This class will explore Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR)—a chemical process that can lead to the deterioration of concrete. ASR occurs when “reactive” silica in certain aggregates reacts with alkali hydroxides present in the concrete’s pore solution. In the presence of moisture\, this reaction forms an expansive gel that exerts internal pressure\, leading to cracking and deformation. Over time\, ASR can significantly compromise the durability and structural integrity of concrete structures. \nKey topics covered include:\n– ASR deterioration: A global and South African perspective\n– The chemistry of ASR: Understanding the underlying chemical processes\n– ASR symptoms and their structural impact \nRequirements for attending this class:\n– Basic knowledge of the constituents of concrete\n– Basic mathematics\, no more than Matric Level \nThe class will build on prior knowledge of concrete deterioration mechanisms and emphasise the role of “reactive” aggregates in concrete performance. \nPresenter: Ms. Janina P. Kanjee\, University of the Witwatersrand\nMs. Janina P. Kanjee is a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand\, where she has been teaching since 2018. Her doctoral research focused on Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) deterioration in a reinforced concrete railway bridge\, located in Southern Johannesburg which was constructed in 1946.\nIn 2023\, she was honoured with the Young Concrete Researcher Award by Cement & Concrete SA\, recognizing her impactful contributions to the field. Her ongoing research centres on concrete durability\, ASR deterioration\, sustainable construction materials and practices. \nDate: Thursday\, 08 May 2025\nTime: 15:00 – 16:00 \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points.
