SUMMARY:CONCRETEClass1.3 - Aggregates in concrete – an appreciation of their role
DESCRIPTION:Aggregates occupy the largest volume in typical concrete mixes. Despite this\, they are often viewed as inert filler materials\, provided for bulk and to reduce the cost of concrete. However\, this view needs to change\, so as to understand aggregates as an integral part of concrete\, and which have profound effects on plastic and hardened concrete properties. This lecture will explore the basics of aggregates and provide an insight into their influential role in concrete. \nRequirements for benefitting from this class:\n– Basic knowledge of the constituents of concrete\n– Basic mathematics\, no more than Matric Level \nPresenter: Prof. Mark Alexander\, University of Cape Town \nMark Alexander is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering\, and a Senior Research Scholar in the University of Cape Town. He has a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand\, Johannesburg\, and is a Fellow of the University of Cape Town\, of RILEM\, of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering\, the South African Academy of Engineering\, and the Indian Concrete Institute. He is a registered Professional Engineer in South Africa. His research interests are in concrete durability\, service life prediction\, concrete sustainability\, and repair and rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete structures. \nDate: Thursday\, 10 April 2025\nTime: 15:00 – 16:00 \nECSA CPD accreditation applied for\nOnly CSSA Members qualify to receive ECSA CPD points.
